URC Statement of Solidarity

As a URC team, we humbly come to you with frustration in our hearts and a duty to stand up for what is right. We stand in solidarity with our Black community at the URC, on our UC Davis campus, the greater Davis/Sacramento community and all those across the US. We acknowledge the demands of our Black community to be heard because their lives matter, Black Lives Matter. At the URC, we provide opportunities in undergraduate research for all UC Davis undergraduate students and many of our programs are aimed at providing opportunities for historically under-served populations, including our Black community members. To our Black scholars, we see you, we hear you, and we value you and most importantly YOU MATTER. Now more than ever, we must take a stand against racism understanding that who we are as individuals comes with us into all of our life experiences and undergraduate research opportunities are not exempt. We do not get to check our identities at the door.  Our Black scholars do not check their blackness at the door.  In part, the mission of the URC is to “encourage and facilitate research opportunities for UC Davis undergraduates in all majors and class levels. The URC promotes research as a high impact student experience to enhance readiness to succeed in future careers” and we recognize that we cannot do this without honoring and acknowledging our scholars for who they are as individuals first. The URC is committed to supporting our Black scholars during these trying, yet not unique, times in our country.

In solidarity,

The URC Team
