Undergraduate research can look different for every student. Whether you are just beginning to explore research, looking for your first opportunity, currently conducting research, or wondering how to take your experience to the next level, Group Research Advising is a great place to start.
Our group advising sessions provide an opportunity to learn about undergraduate research, ask questions, connect with other students, and identify the next step that makes sense for you.
What can you expect
Group Research Advising is an interactive advising experience—not a workshop or presentation. You will have an opportunity to talk with a URC advisor, share your questions and goals, and learn about resources and opportunities that can help you move forward.
Depending on where you are in your research journey, we can help you:
- Explore what undergraduate research can look like
- Identify your research interests
- Learn how to find research opportunities and potential faculty mentors
- Navigate the process of getting involved in research
- Make the most of an existing research experience
- Explore research grants, funding, and fellowships
- Prepare to present your research at conferences and symposia
- Identify ways to deepen or expand your research experience
- Connect your research experience to graduate school, careers, and future opportunities
Start with group advising
We encourage students to begin with a Group Research Advising session. Many students have questions and needs that are shared by others, and group advising gives you an opportunity to learn from both the advisor and your peers.
After participating in a group advising session, students who would benefit from more individualized guidance are encouraged to schedule a one-on-one appointment with a URC advisor.
One-on-one advising is especially helpful when you have a specific research opportunity, faculty mentor, funding application, research project, or other situation that requires individualized attention.
Group advising helps you get started. Individual advising helps you go deeper.
