Students are invited to submit their manuscripts to journals that are specifically targeted for undergraduate researchers.

Why Would I Want to Publish?

For undergraduate students who are considering pursuing Master's or Ph.D. degrees, publishing is impressive for graduate school applications and is also an essential skill to develop in academia. An undergraduate research journal or literary magazine is a great start for your first publication.

Some of the following publishing opportunities on the UC Davis campus are produced by student groups, departments and scholarship groups. These opportunities include the following:

Prized Writing is sponsored by the University Writing Program. They also run a concurrent competition for cover art. Prized Writing is sold in the campus bookstore and used in various General Education courses. Their annual deadline for submissions is also mid-June, and complete rules and entry forms are available on the Prized Writing Web site.

Aggie Transcript is a peer-reviewed life sciences journal that publishes news, reviews, research, art, and other scientific productions created by undergraduates.  All submission inquiries, comments, and questions are encouraged and can be directed to aggietranscript@gmail.com. To view the journal, click here.

UC Davis Human Rights Journal is an undergraduate and graduate journal highlighting research, art and prose from UC Davis students. The journal aims to portray the general subject of human rights through a cross-disciplinary approach. For more information, contact The UC Davis Human Rights Journal.

UC Davis Health Student Review is the first ever publication of the UC Davis School of Medicine, which features content from students across UC Davis.  The review aims to provide tomorrow's healthcare leaders with an opportunity to develop the skills they need today, while following in the tradition of research and clinical excellence that UC Davis has developed over the last century.

The editorial team includes many deans and faculty from the UC Davis School of Medicine; thus, this is a great opportunity for professional development.

Publishing Outside of UC Davis

Undergraduate students may also find opportunities to publish outside of UC Davis.  Online, look up “Undergraduate Research Publications” and you will get pages of results.  For each journal you are considering, find out the publication’s deadline dates and publishing practices.  Always consult with your faculty sponsor when considering publishing your research work.
