Undergraduate Faculty Mentor:  Dr. Jeremy Chien
Three words to describe me: Curious, determined, ambitious

What are your future plans and/or goals?

I would like to explore the vast interdisciplinary applications of computer science, particularly within the biomedical or physical science fields. I am interested in pursuing a career involving research in which I can apply my computational and coding skills.

In what ways has engaging in undergraduate research impacted your future goals and plans?

Participating in research within computational biology has not only fueled my passion for pursuing new discoveries, but has also strengthened my confidence in my ability to develop and apply technical skills like programming for the sake of the advancement of research.

What contribution(s) will your research make to your field of study?

My research on ovarian cancer patients will help elucidate genetic markers or biochemical pathways that contribute to the development of resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy treatments. Any conclusions drawn could allow us to optimize treatments through better prediction of a given patient's platinum resistance based on a their genome, history, and various other factors.

What preparation and research experience did you have before applying to your research program?

Prior to joining the CAMP program at UC Davis, I had minimal research in a field less relevant to my interests. I participated in a summer study on captive animal behavior monitoring and enrichment as part of an effort to explore research in the field of animal science, my former major. Upon deciding to switch my major to computer science, I also decided to pursue research in computational biology, which landed me in my current lab position. I simultaneously joined the CAMP program which enabled me to gain exposure to research on a broader level.

What advice do you have for other undergraduate students seeking research experiences?

I encourage students to engage with their professors in classes that particularly interest them. Even if you don't end up pursuing research under a particular professor, there is still so much that you can learn about their journey and research experiences, while building a valuable connection that may pay off in the future. I also especially encourage students belonging to marginalized groups to explore the many opportunities open to them at both their own university and any other schools of interest. I personally had no idea how many opportunities were open to me until various mentors brought my attention to them, and I am continually delighted to find out about more diversity-oriented programs.

Sydney has this to say about the CAMP program:
"Not only have I gained tremendous exposure to the many facets of pursuing research through this program, but I have also found an incredible community of supportive peers and professionals alike that I could not be more grateful to be a part of and contribute to someday."

What else would you like us to know about you?

I am incredibly grateful to be involved, and excited to be able to present for the first time!
