California Alliance for Minority Participation (CAMP)
Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), California Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (CAMP) represents the California branch of the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program. CAMP is hosted on eight of the UC campuses, with the lead campus for the California Alliance centered at UC Irvine (CAMP Statewide). The LSAMP program assists universities and colleges in their efforts to significantly increase the numbers of students matriculating into and successfully completing high quality degree programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines in order to diversify the STEM workforce. Particular emphasis is placed on transforming undergraduate STEM education through innovative, evidence-based recruitment and retention strategies, and relevant educational experiences in support of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines: African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Native Pacific Islanders.
CAMP at UC Davis aims to recruit and retain students in STEM majors, facilitate their academic success, and encourage their transition to graduate study. Faculty-mentored research experiences play a large role in the program and CAMP Scholars actively participate in research for 40 hours/week during the summer and 10 hours/week throughout the academic year.There are two pathways in which to take advantage of the CAMP program:
Pathway #1 - CAMP Scholars:Outstanding students may be selected as “CAMP Research Scholars” and receive stipends to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Stipend amounts are up to $3,200 for the summer and up to $800 per quarter during the Academic Year. The research activities can take place
a) summer only. Applications for the summer program are due in late March.
b) academic year. Applications for the academic year are due in mid summer. Applications will be accepted in Fall if space allows, but for best chance apply in mid summer.
c) both of the above.
CAMP Scholars meet weekly for advising appointments with the CAMP Program Coordinator.
Pathway #2 - CAMP Members:Students accepted as CAMP Members do not receive research stipends but may participate in any of the CAMP program activities such as tutoring, workshops, seminars, and field trips. Applications to be a CAMP Member are accepted throughout the year.
Eligibility. To apply to the CAMP program (both pathways) you must:
- Be African American, Chicano, Latino, Native American, or Pacific Islander (Pacific peoples from Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, Cook Islands, other islands in Polynesia)
- Be a UC Davis student in good academic standing
- Have a 2.7 UC cumulative GPA
- Be a declared STEM major. If you are an undeclared STEM major, please indicate this in your student statement and state the reason you are undeclared.
- Be a US Citizen or permanent resident

CAMP Resources available to all participants:
The CAMP Scholars Room, Surge IV, Suite 414, is a place for CAMP students to study and/or relax between classes. Here, you can check out text books and other materials to help you with classes and you can also see bulletin boards for details about scholarships, conferences, research and career opportunities, graduate school, upcoming events, and more.
A computer room is also available with computers and a printer. Feel free to use these computers to write papers or work on course projects/homework.
