Aggie Scholars Research Initiative

Expanding research opportunities in the social sciences, arts and humanities

The Aggie Scholars Research Initiative (ASRI) is designed to expand access to research opportunities for UC Davis undergraduates in the social sciences, arts and humanities. The program supports students through mentorship, workshops and collaborative learning experiences as they explore research pathways and develop meaningful projects.

ASRI aims to promote equitable participation in undergraduate research, with a focus on empowering students from underrepresented backgrounds in these disciplines.

Program overview

ASRI includes two tiers. Each offers mentorship and structured support tailored to students’ experience level and research goals.

Tier 1: Independent research experience (winter–spring)

  • For students who already have a faculty mentor and research topic
  • Includes independent research supported by workshops and biweekly check-ins
  • Students complete a research proposal and a final project

Tier 2: Cohort-based workshop series (spring only)

  • For students still exploring potential topics or mentors
  • Participants work in teams on research projects focused on themes such as public engagement, sustainability and more
  • Includes workshops and biweekly group support to build research skills and complete team deliverables

What You’ll Gain

Through ASRI, students will:

  • Build core research skills, including design, analysis, academic writing and public presentation
  • Complete substantial research deliverables
    • Tier 1: Independent project
    • Tier 2: Collaborative paper and presentation
  • Gain mentorship and experience relevant to graduate school or future careers
  • Receive up to $1,000 in compensation after completing all program requirements
